Any reputable vw van repair manual will instruct you NOT to boost a dead battery in your van if the battery is still connected to the van electrical system=doing so can not only damage the battery cell(s) as well as possibly damaging your alternator. Dont even hook up a trickle charger to your battery without first removing battery from your van. Rapid boost chargers-that claim to recharge your dead battery in 1-2 hours -can damage battery plates due to overheating same plates. Hope this helps you Monica.
