Hi! My name is Sam and as of April 2007, I am the proud owner of a 1973/1977 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Van named "Juicy Lucy Matilda". We live in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada. This blog will track the thrills and heartaches that Lucy and I will undoubtedly share on our open road adventures.

Very cool site. I have a 72 Karmann Ghia. You should post some more about it!

Very cool man! i've been looking at picking up a westfalia for sometime now. Did you do any upgrades or did it just come pimped out?

HI Sam. Can you tell me where you got your van painted. We have a 1986 Westfalia we are wanting to get painted and do not know where to take it. We live in Victoria.
Thanks Sam.

Shyrl, I had my van paint job done locally, and it was a bit of a sketchy scene. However, there's a VW restoration shop in Courtenay that you might be interested in: Original Restorations.

You may no longer have the VW but your problem is most likely the starter. I had a 73 that would do the same thing. If you have a friend close by have them turn the key (make sure it is not in gear) while you roll under and tap the starter with something solid (rubber mallet, wood, etc) and it will probably start. Starters are not hard to change but you will need sockets and your hands will get dirty.

Darrell, I do still have Lucy and I'm sure it's the starter. I'm probably not your average Westy owner in that I won't do any mechanical work on it myself. So, Lucy has sat waiting for repairs since the starter went. The starter won't cost much, but she needs about $4000 of work total and I'd like to get it all done at once. I may get her on the road this summer. It's just a matter of financial priorities.
